2020 14U CBT Wolfpack Team Preview

2019 RECAP: Team Record 20-10 (1 Tournament Champ) Team Batting Average .333 * Team ERA 4.10

Team Most Valuable Player Abe Maurer (Fond Du Lac, WI), team MV-Pitcher Payton Miller (Neenah, WI) and Most Improved Player Ryan Pierquet (Chilton, WI) all return to a talented team that went 20-10 and easily could have been 23-7 due to a few really close losses.  Maurer hit an impressive .453 with a 1.283 OPS on the season and caught the majority of the innings behind the plate.  Miller led the team in innings pitched with 31 while striking out 26 and a 3.69 ERA.  Pierquet did a little bit of everything playing CF, 2B, and Pitching while leading the team in steals (28) and runs scored (36).  Connor Timm (Menasha, WI) was second on the team with a .421 average and power hitting Abe Coronado (Kimberly, WI) led the team with 3 HR's.

NEWCOMERS:  RHP Blake Griesbach (Neenah, WI), 2B/OF Carter Kallies (Suamico, WI), LHP/1B Ben Wesolowski (Suamico, WI), RHP/OF Sawyer Conradt (Hortonville, WI) and RHP/OF Jacob Riddick (Ripon, WI) round out the 5 newcomers.

Griesbach and Wesolowski are going to look to help our pitching staff and add a good RHP and LHP to the staff.  Wesolowski will also see some time at 1B and OF.  I coached Carter Kallies dating back to the Panther days and I'm very happy his parents contacted me this past season about joining CBT.  Carter is a talented left handed hitting 2B/OF that will provide a lot of offense for us at the top of our order.  Sawyer Conradt is the younger brother of Jonah Conradt who is on our 15U team.  Sawyer is a 7th grader and a year younger than everyone and due to not having a 13U team this year, we bumped Sawyer up to the 14U group.  He will fit in just fine as he's as talented as they come and a hard worker with high baseball IQ.  Riddick is a big, strong kid who has a ton of potential both in the box and on the mound.  He could be a difference maker for this team due to his physicality and versatility.

INFIELD: Miller, Kallies, Timm, Coronado, Pierquet, and Sawyer Deering (Kimberly, WI) will all battle for spots in the infield.  Deering is another 7th grader who is playing up due to not having a 13U team.  This will be his second year playing up and he more than held his own last year batting nearly .360, throwing 20 innings on the mound, and in many tough situations.  Miller usually covers Shortstop while Kallies, Pierquet, Coronado and Deering will split time between 3B and 2B.  Timm usually mans 1B with Coronado getting more time this year as well.

OUTFIELD:  Mainstays in the outfield will be Hayden Quimby (Appleton, WI), Pierquet, Riddick, Wesolowski, and Jack Nikolay (De Pere, WI).  Battling for time in the outfield will also be Aidan Nelson (Neenah, WI) and Conradt who looks like he will be able to play wherever we put him on the field.

Nikolay does double duty as he catches and plays a lot of left field.  Quimby is likely our best defensive outfielder while Riddick is a big bodied athlete who can cover a lot of ground.  Pierquet will split time in the outfield and 2B and Wesolowski will see some time in RF in addition to his time on the mound.

PITCHING:  The pitching last year was good but will be upgraded considerably with the additions of Riddick, Wesolowski, Griesbach, and Conradt.  The rotation is strong across the board and it will be interesting to see who paces the staff this year as the leader.  The overall depth of the staff is the highlight.

Miller RHP - High velocity guy with strikeout stuff - was last years team MV-Pitcher

Pierquet RHP - Quality pitcher that competes and gives quality outings each time he takes the mound

Riddick RHP - Big body kid with velocity - if he adds command he could be dominant

Griesbach RHP -Solid pitcher who works hard on the little things - we're excited to see what he adds to us this year

Timm RHP - Another solid RHP who keeps getting stronger and stronger - was third in innings pitched last year

Wesolowski LHP - Only lefty on the staff and we will look to him for a bunch of innings in his first year with us

Deering RHP - Great competitor with good stuff & loves the tough moment & competes - a year younger (7th grader)

Conradt RHP - Another great kid and competitor who is a year younger (7th grade) huge potential!

Nelson RHP - A kid that just keeps working & it's starting to pay off - we look to get some quality innings from him

Coronado RHP - Pitches sparingly but has ability - high velocity kid with a ton of potential if he wants it

CATCHERS:  Team MVP Maurer and Nikolay will do the bulk of the catching.  Kallies is versatile enough to step in too but between Maurer and Nikolay, we are very solid at the catcher spot.  Nikolay excels at blocking and receiving and Maurer is a threat to throw out any potential base stealer with his strong arm and good feet.

POTENTIAL BREAKOUT PLAYER:  After seeing Pierquet breakout with a great year last year, all signs point to Jacob Riddick as being a difference maker for this team. His unique size, strength and bat speed are rare at his age and if he can use it to the best of his ability, it could carry us.  Kallies is another kid who can jump start a team by getting on base and causing havoc on the base paths using his baseball instincts and speed.  The thoughts of him and Pierquet at the top of the order, getting on base, stealing bases and setting the table for guys like Maurer, Miller, Coronado, Timm, and Riddick, could equal a lot of runs.

BOTTOM LINE:  Like the rest of our teams, this team is considerably better than it was a year ago.  Last years team went 20-10 and with flipping our roster in terms of talent makes for a good recipe for an even better year in 2020.  Brandon Huffman will lead the team this year and everyone excited to see him put his stamp on this team during his first stint as a head coach.
