2020 17U CBT Wolfpack Team Preview

2019 RECAP:  Team Record 10-15 * Team Batting Average .277 * Team ERA 4.00

A really tough schedule included trips to Cincinnati, OH and Cedar Rapids, IA, contributed to a tough summer for the 16U.  High level competition along with the grueling travel schedule was hard, but there were many positives.  Team MVP Carter Stebane (Brillion, WI) hit .373 with a 1.025 OPS while MV-Pitcher Dwight Koehler (Ripon, WI) struck out more batters than innings pitched coupled with a solid 3.12 ERA.

NEWCOMERS:  Our staff is really excited about our 5 additions to this team and the versatility they bring.  Peyton Becker (Merrill, WI) brings speed and pop to the lineup and can play any infield spot and also projects well in the outfield due to his speed.  RHP/3B Jake Huntington (Kimberly, WI) adds a potential ace to the pitching staff and middle of the lineup hitter.  RHP/2B Logan Paplham (Denmark, WI) adds depth to the mound and to the infield.  His potential on the mound is imminent as his older brother is a standpoint pitcher at Lake Land CC in Illinois.  Logan looks to follow suit.  Catcher Michael Maloney (Pulaski, WI) comes to us with travel baseball experience and will look to platoon at catcher with Tyler Lawson and Sawyer Hau.  Maloney had a good fall with us and looks to add quality depth at the catcher position.  OF Payton McClowry (Neenah, WI) adds a talented player to our outfield and will help us on the mound.  The 6'3" McClowry has the size and frame every college is looking for and a work ethic to match.  Recently added RHP Logan Schulfer adds a high end ace and is a top 5 rated player in the state of Wisconsin (PBR).  Logan is committed to UW-Milwaukee and is on early scouting boards as a possible draft pick out of high school in 2021's June MLB draft.

INFIELD: Stebane has been a mainstay at SS with this group all the way back to the 12U days with the Panthers.  As talented of a player I've ever had, Stebane is a high level college player.  The additions of Becker and Paplham to go along with returners Kolton Tesarik (Mishicot, WI), Will Mattheis (Laconia, WI), George Henkel (Appleton, WI), and Sawyer Hau (Brandon, WI), add a lot of depth to the infield it didn't have last year.

OUTFIELD:  The outfield will be a mixture of guys including Tyler Lawson (Escanaba, MI), Becker, Hau, Jacob Pownell (Appleton, WI), McClowry, Jamison Besaw (Shawano, WI) and Dwight Koehler.

The ones to keep an eye on here are Lawson and McClowry.  Lawson batted .309 last summer in his first taste of travel baseball and held his own behind the plate.  In addition to catching, we look to use him more in the outfield this year to utilize his speed a little bit more, especially with the addition of Maloney behind the plate.  In a limited capacity last year, McClowry showed signs of potential both at the plate batting .300 in 21 plate appearances while flashing a really good glove on defense in the outfield.

PITCHING:  Pitching last year for this group was good. The additions of Huntington, Paplham and Tesarik add a ton of depth for this group that lacked it last summer.

Huntington RHP - A potential ace type talent, Huntington is a huge add to this team - 3 pitch guy with pitch-ability

Koehler RHP - Last years team MV-Pitcher and plus breaking ball - We look for much of the same from Dwight

Henkel RHP- Ton of potential with high SO ability & wipeout slider - More command needed but ceiling is high

Paplham RHP - Up to 82mph and he's still only 140 lbs.  Much more in the tank - Brother is up to 93mph in college

Besaw LHP - Guy that is tough to barrel up and just gets outs and competes - will be an inning eater for us

Mattheis RHP - Up to 83mph this winter and two plus off speed pitches with 2 variations of BB's and +CH

Tesarik RHP - Played down on the 15U team last year due to logistics but will add another quality arm

Pownell RHP - A kid who has shown flashes of pitch-ability and someone we look to add more innings this year

Becker RHP - An inning eater that can more than hold his own on the mound - Mostly will play middle IF & CF

Hau RHP - Another guy who can eat innings & a little unconventional delivery that can be deceiving to hitters

Schulfer RHP - Arguably the best pitcher in the state in the 2021 class, Schulfer boasts a 90mph changeup with a very advanced changeup

CATCHERS:  Maloney and Lawson will get the bulk of the innings but Hau has come on a lot over the last year with his receiving and blocking skills.  It is a group that with the addition of Maloney becomes much better and much deeper than last year.

HIGH FOLLOWS:  Stebane is a must see talent at SS and is one of the best I've had at that position in 11 years. He's as good as Brent Widder who plays at the University of Evansville and as good as Bubba Thomson who plays at Southern University in Louisiana.  RHP's Huntington, Henkel and Mattheis have low to mid 80's fastballs with + off speed stuff to compliment.  Mattheis also has some potential and pop in his left handed swing and could be a two way guy at the next level.

POTENTIAL BREAKOUT PLAYER:  OF Payton McClowry is a kid based on his work ethic and intangibles should open some eyes this summer.  He runs well, has loose hands and plays a really good outfield.  In his short time with us last summer, we were contacted by a number of schools asking who he was.  Another one to keep an eye out for is Jake Huntington who not only pitches but can really swing it too and should see a lot of time in the middle of our lineup to go along with his potential ace 'stuff' on the mound.

BOTTOM LINE:  This team is so much better in all aspects and should turn around their record considerably this year.  The pitching staff is way deeper and is a lot better defensively behind the plate and the middle infield.  The additions of Becker and Huntington to add along with returners Stebane, Mattheis, Hau, and Lawson, makes for a really good and balanced lineup of speed and power.  Former Milwaukee Brewers draft pick and standout at the University of Pittsburgh, Luke Curtis, will lead this team full time for the 2020 season.
